I'm Dr Gordon Wright, a lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London and Co-Director of the Forensic Psychology Unit.
My research examines liars and so-called 'dark' personalities: Machiavellians, Narcissists, Psychopaths and Sadists. I know that doesn't sound very nice, but it's fascinating and my hope is that by understanding more about these people, and the ways they go about their business, the safer we will be. Interestingly, aspects of these personality types might feasibly be considered beneficial and there may be a 'light in the darkness'.
My colleagues and I are currently running a large research project examining psychological, non-coercive techniques designed to help improve the amount of information obtained in investigative interviews. Read more here
As part of the Forensic Psychology Unit, we try to share our passion for our research with the public, as well as current and future psychology students. Some videos of these events can be seen on the right. We've explored the Psychology of a Murder Investigation (and won an award), the Psychology of a Murder Trial, and we just finished solving crimes in the 80's.
I run the final year undergraduate module 'Psychology & Law', as well as contributing to our MSc in Forensic Psychology, as a lecturer and Research Coordinator. If you want to study psychology, do so, it's amazing, and Goldsmiths is a great place to do it. Check out our courses
I'm also lucky enough to supervise three excellent PhD candidates:
Jo Kenrick, researching the development of deceptive 'skill'
Alessandra Caso, exploring the impact of repeated interviews in forensic settings
Rebecca Wheeler, examining the use of self-generated cues to memory retrieval and the challenges of engaging with reluctant witnesses of crime
I'm also delighted to be supervising over a dozen MSc projects at the moment, all examining fascinating aspects of deception, Dark Tetrad traits and various antisocial behaviours.
